Aperture Card Conversion
Cull’s digital transformation centre offers solutions for the conversion and digitisation of aperture card images to digital formats for easier access and future preservation.
Aperture cards are a type of microform that contain 35mm microfilm images usually of AO size engineering drawings. They consist of a rectangular card with a rectangular aperture or window in the centre. The microfilm is mounted inside the aperture with the image positioned to align with the window.
Aperture cards were popular in the mid-20th century as a means of storing large collections of technical drawings, maps and other types of engineering documents. By condensing really large originals such as AO size onto a single card, aperture cards offered a more compact and efficient means of storage than traditional paper copies. The cards can be loaded into a microfilm printer to view the contents.
But the technology associated with reading aperture cards is expensive to buy and maintain. As a specialist scanning service, we can convert aperture card images to digital formats for easier access and preservation.
Digitised formats offer;
- Improved space savings
- Improved quality
- Searchability
- Fast retrieval
- Quick and easy access from anywhere in the world
- No need for special equipment
Cull can convert and digitise your aperture cards in bulk or on demand. They will be scanned, indexed and saved to any format you choose such as PDF. The resultant images are as crisp and clear as the microfilm will allow with a high resolution.

The costs of digitisation are specific to each project. Our team will provide you with a detailed analysis for an accurate quote. The most significant factors that affect the price of a project are the total volume of documents to be scanned and the indexing required. Have a chat with one of the team today to find out more.
