Microfiche Conversion
Cull’s digital transformation centre offers solutions for the conversion and digitisation of microfiche archives – the ultimate way to preserve information.
Microfiche is a type of microform – a format of storing large amounts of information in a compact format; in this case, a sheet of flat film.
Each sheet of flat, photographic film is 105 x 148 mm in size, the same size as the international standard for paper size ISO A6. It carries a matrix of micro images, usually reduced to about 1/25 their normal size. The most commonly used format is a portrait image of about 10 x 14 mm. Historically, microfiche was used to preserve A4/A3 documentation.
Microfiche was typically used in the early 20th century for libraries and archives, business, NHS Medical Records and government records, educational materials and newspaper archives.
To preserve the sensitivity of microfiche, it is important to store it in a cool, dry, and dark place with minimal exposure to light and chemicals. Handling should be done with clean hands or gloves to avoid leaving oils or other residues on the film. It’s important to use proper storage containers and avoid folding or bending the film, as this can damage the emulsion.
But the ultimate way to preserve the information held on microfiche for long term usage is digitisation. By creating digital copies that can be easily stored and backed up you will:
- Improve space savings
- Improve quality
- Make you documents searchable
- Be able to instantly retrieve documents
- Access them quickly and easily from anywhere in the world
Cull can convert and digitise your microfiche archives in bulk or on demand. They will be scanned, indexed and saved to any format you choose, normally PDF images. The resultant images are as crisp and clear as the microfiche will allow with a high resolution.
Whether you have a large-scale archival project or have a one-off film of sentimental value let us take care of it. Use our Quick Quote tool or Get in touch to find out how we can help you today.

Microfiche FAQ's
A microfiche is a sheet of flat film, 105 x 148 mm in size, the same size as the international standard for paper size ISO A6. It carries a matrix of micro images, usually reduced to about 1/25 their normal size. The most commonly used format is a portrait image of about 10 x 14 mm. Historically, microfiche was used to preserve A4/A3 documentation.
Microfilm is a roll of images like a movie reel usually either 16mm or 35mm in size while microfiche is a flat sheet of microfilm. Because the documents are usually reduced to about 1/25 their normal size, microform storage can easily store thousands of documents without taking up much space.
A microfiche machine is a device used in projecting and magnifying images stored in microform to a readable size. A microfiche machine or ‘reader’ is often also a microfilm reader, so you’ll be able to view the images on both types of material. If connected to a printer, you can also use a microfilm or microfiche reader to print your microform images.
A microfiche reader is a device used in projecting and magnifying images stored in microform to a readable size. A microfiche reader printer can also print back images back to paper format.
Microform was ground-breaking in the 1920s, allowing newspapers to be preserved in a way that delivered substantial space savings, and ensured high quality of images. Nowadays, there is a better alternative to storing microfilm and microfiche libraries in analogue form that allows businesses or institutions to quickly and easily retrieve stored documents or images without the need for any specialist equipment.
The costs of digitisation are specific to each project. Our team will provide you with a detailed analysis for an accurate quote. The most significant factors that affect the price of a project are the total volume of documents to be scanned and the indexing required. Have a chat with one of the team today to find out more.
